The Ford F-150 is the top-selling vehicle for the brand. That means Ford poured a lot of energy and resources into research and development for this model. From basic to most decked-out, the trim levels include the XL, XLT, Lariat, Tremor, King Ranch, Platinum, Raptor, and the most expensive, the Limited.
For the 2023 production, Ford made a few integral changes to the F-150 lineup. The Rattler package is a new addition, giving drivers the option to get a truck that is fully loaded with impressive off-roading features like a locking rear differential, off-road suspension, a dual-exhaust system, and hill-descent control. The Rattler also has unique style components, such as 18-inch wheels and original rattle-snake-inspired logos throughout. However, while Ford does offer quite a lot with its truck, is it really offering anything better than the Silverado?
What’s New for the Silverado 1500 for 2023?
As for the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500, there is no shortage of admirable qualities that have drawn fans to this truck through multiple generations. For 2023, Chevy revised the available diesel powertrain by adding power and torque to their Duramax engine. Upgraded pistons, new fuel injectors, and a revised combustion bowl deliver an additional 28 horsepower and 35 lb-ft of torque (for a total of 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque). Ford no longer offers a diesel engine, so the Silverado 1500 is the way to go if this is your preference. Also included in the engine lineup are the 2.7L high-output turbo I-4, the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8, and the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8.
Chevy fans get to choose from nine versatile trims, including the WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, ZR2, and the High Country. For the 2023 run of the ZR2, Chevy took inspiration from American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) and added even more off-roading prowess to this trim in the form of the Bison Edition package. Plus, each Silverado 1500 comes standard with a Durabed that can handle whatever you throw at it. The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 gives drivers the option of four high-performing and efficient powertrains. There is a small yet mighty 2.7L High Output turbocharged I-4. This engine delivers 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque and operates with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The next available engine is a 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 powertrain with a ten-speed automatic transmission. This setup has an output of 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Or, you can opt for the larger 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engine that delivers 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque with a ten-speed automatic transmission. Finally, there is the 3.0L inline-six diesel configuration with an output of 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque, a ten-speed automatic transmission, and a fuel economy of 24 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway, which is exceptional for any truck model.
Ford’s 2023 F-150 also comes in a variety of powertrains. The smallest is a 3.3L V6 that produces 290 horsepower, slightly slower than Chevy’s 2.7L turbo, and 265 lb-ft of torque, which is significantly less than Chevy's 430 lb-ft. There is a 2.7L turbo V6 that puts out 325 horsepower, a dynamic 5.0L V8 with 400 horsepower, and a 3.5L turbo V6 that puts out 400 horsepower. Every Ford F-150 comes standard with a ten-speed automatic transmission.
Handling On and Off the Road
The Silverado 1500 offers agile handling, superior to that of the F-150. The brakes are confident and firm, and it handles impeccably when off-roading. Of the trims, the ZR2 has the best setup for off-roading with features like Multimatic DSSV dampers, an enhanced two-speed transfer case that includes Terrain mode and low-range rock crawling, off-road chassis and suspension calibration, underbody aluminum skid plates, front and rear locking electronic rear differentials, and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud-terrain tires. Many of these features can also be found on other trims. Ford F-150’s Tremor is the best-suited trim for off-roading. It shares some similarities to Chevy’s ZR2, including the 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires, tuned suspension, a locking rear differential, and a four-wheel drive transfer case.

Ford has a comparable means of allocating higher-end features only to their top trim levels. The F-150 basic XL trim only offers cloth seats, four speakers, and an eight-inch touchscreen.
