2023 Chevy Colorado

A green 2023 Chevy Colorado is angled left.

While the power and performance of a full-size truck is the right choice for some people, for others, a midsize pickup is the perfect combination of robust power in a more-modest package. If you are interested in a midsize truck, you owe it to yourself to look at the all-new 2023 Chevy Colorado, which is launching a new generation for this award-winning pickup. The Colorado has been a favorite among many drivers for decades, but its updates this year are becoming a more capable truck with off-road features that put most other pickups to shame.

One of our favorite things about the 2023 model is that Chevy has simplified its performance with a single engine available on all models. Chevy’s engineers have gone above and beyond, however, by tuning this engine to create three different versions so you can get the right amount of power for what you need your truck to do. The standard engine is a 2.7L Turbo that delivers 237 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque, while an available 2.7L Turbo Plus version boosts up to 310 hp, 390 lb-ft of torque, and allows the Colorado to tow up to 7,700 lbs of weight behind it. A High-Output version of the engine is exclusive to the off-road ZR2 trim, providing the same horsepower plus 430 lb-ft of torque to let the Colorado handle anything the trail throws at you.

Speaking of its off-road performance, Chevy has delivered an exceptional trail-ready truck with the 2023 Colorado, thanks to numerous suspension options and available four-wheel drive (4WD). The ZR2 trim is the undisputed leader in off-road-ready Colorado models, with an exclusive Baja mode for going off-road at high speeds and a factory lift that gives it greater clearance and angles than other Colorado models. Once you add a standard 11.3-inch infotainment display, an available 11-inch driver information center, and fantastic standard safety features, the 2023 Colorado leaves every other midsize truck in its dust.

Few things are as important when looking at a truck as the engine; all of your pickup’s performance and abilities come from the kind of power the engine can deliver. With some trucks, you have four or five different engines to choose from, which can get far too complicated and means the manufacturer has to have ironed out any issues with multiple powertrains. The 2023 Chevy Colorado has a simplified way of doing things: a single engine is available in three different versions, so you know their engineers have perfected its performance.

Engine Options

With the two starting trims of the all-new Colorado, you get a 2.7L Turbo engine that delivers 237 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque. Going up to the next two trim levels, you get a 2.7L Turbo Plus engine that boosts those numbers up to 310 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. This engine is also available on the starting trims if you want more power without getting any of the other extra features and options on the higher trims. The ZR trim of the Colorado, designed with an off-road focus, features a 2.7L Turbo High-Output engine that delivers 310 hp but boosts the torque up to 430 lb-ft, which is ideal for the trail. Every version of this engine comes paired with a second-generation eight-speed automatic transmission for smooth shifting and a great driving experience.

Towing and Payload Capacity

No matter which model you choose, the 2023 Colorado provides excellent capability, though your engine pick will impact your overall ability. The two starting trims with the standard engine can handle up to 1,684 lbs of payload capacity, but choosing the higher trims with the Turbo Plus engine reduces that to 1,587 lbs of payload. The ZR2 trim, with its off-road design, can handle up to 1,151 lbs of payload. For towing, however, the Turbo Plus engine is king: it gives the Colorado up to 7,700 lbs of trailering capability, and the ZR2 can handle up to 6,000 lbs of towing due to its off-road engineering.

Off-Road Performance

The Chevy Colorado has been a favorite amongst trail enthusiasts for many years; the all-new 2023 model is taking that off-road performance to the next level with fantastic engineering and design across all models. There is no denying, however, that the ZR2 trim is the star of the show when it comes to hitting the trail, so keep that in mind. Most models come with rear-wheel drive (RWD) standard and have 4WD available; the ZR, however, features standard 4WD and a host of other off-road improvements.

Ground Clearance

For example, most trims for the 2023 Colorado (the WT, LT, and Z71 trims, to be precise) feature a standard chassis that is great for daily driving and can handle some light off-roading. If you want to go further, the Trail Boss trim features a two-inch factory-lifted chassis with an ultra-wide stance that looks fantastic and makes it better equipped to go off-road. The standard WT and LT trims have 7.9 inches of ground clearance, the Z71 has 8.9 inches of ground clearance, and the lifted Trail Boss can clear 9.5 inches below it.

The ZR2’s Impressive Approach/Departure/Break-Over Angles

While all of this off-road design is great, if you want to see what the all-new Colorado can do, you need to check out the ZR2 trim. The ZR2 comes with a high-performance three-inch factory-lifted chassis with a wide stance for going over anything the trail throws at you. This chassis gives the Colorado ZR2 10.7 inches of ground clearance, which is almost 3 inches greater than models with the standard one. With this design, the ZR2 has a 38.3-degree approach angle, a 25.1-degree departure angle, and a 24.6-degree break-over angle, making it perfect for handling a wide range of obstacles.

The ZR2’s Off-Road Features

The 2023 Colorado ZR2 features 17-inch wheels wrapped in 33-inch mud/terrain tires, along with segment-exclusive Multimatic DSSV dampers and aluminum skid plates that protect its underside. Other Colorado models feature four available drive modes: Normal, Tow/Haul, Terrain for crawling or steep inclines, and Off-Road for loose surfaces and low-speed driving. The ZR2 has an exclusive fifth drive mode: Baja, designed for sandy terrain and going at higher speeds while off-roading. To take things to the next level, check out the ZR2 Desert Boss package, which features 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, an off-road bumper and front fascia, and a roof-mounted light bar to illuminate your next desert adventure.

Technology

The black interior of a 2023 Chevy Colorado.

As it launches an all-new generation, the 2023 Colorado kicks things off with a standard 11.3-inch infotainment display that looks absolutely stunning in every model. An 8-inch digital color instrument display is standard, but the available 11-inch display takes the interior to the next level. You get support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the all-new Colorado, along with available Google built-in support and an extra-large wireless charging pad for added functionality.

Class-Leading Camera Technology

Taking things even further are 10 available camera views, making the Colorado the new class leader, which includes available underbody cameras with both forward and rear-facing views to let you see underneath your pickup while on the trail. This is perfect for going off-road in your Colorado and pairs well with the new off-road performance display. With this activated, you are provided with real-time information, including your truck’s pitch and roll, the g-forces on it, and an altimeter to keep you informed.

The Chevy Safety Assist Package

Perhaps best of all, the 2023 Colorado comes with the Chevy Safety Assist package standard on every model, so you don’t have to pay more to stay safe. This includes a forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking, which warns you of potential collisions and supports you with the extra braking power to avoid a potential crash. You also get lane keep assist with lane departure warning standard, which helps you avoid drifting from your lane to ensure you get home safe and sound at the end of the day.
