The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 emerges from a deep refresh sporting a new look, new tech, a new base engine, and more. Although the fourth-generation Silverado only hit the market three years ago, Chevy is not giving its flagship model a chance to grow stale. While most mid-cycle refreshes are restricted to a few styling tweaks and other small changes, Chevy thinks big and gave the 2022 Silverado a total makeover. The fully redesigned cabin offers a premium feel that is more than skin-deep, blending durable upscale materials with cutting-edge technology to create a truck that is ready for long drives and long days at work. Meanwhile, under the hood, you will find some major changes to the powertrains, offering greater efficiency and more muscle for heavy towing.

Drivers looking for the ultimate luxury on the highway will be excited to learn that the Super Cruise is now an option for the 2022 Silverado, enabling true hands-free driving. Meanwhile, off-road enthusiasts will be blown away by the brand-new Silverado ZR2 and its long list of exclusive performance features. From Multimatic spool-valve dampers to front and rear lockers, this is an off-road truck ready to hit the trail and show up the competition. Of course, if you just want a no-nonsense work truck, Chevy has you covered with an affordable starting price and some of the best work-ready features in the industry, including the largest pickup beds in the segment.

Pick Your Engine

Chevy has always offered plenty of engine options for the Silverado 1500, and for 2022, those options have only gotten better. While some truckers might question the decision to eliminate the old 4.3L V6 from the lineup, though the now-standard 2.7L turbocharged engine has seen some major upgrades. Now boasting 310 horsepower and a staggering 420 lb-ft of torque, this standard engine will have your friends thinking you have a V8 under the hood. Of course, if you do feel the need for a real V8, Chevy has you covered. With the 2022 Silverado 1500, you can still select either a 5.3L V8 with 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque or a 6.2L V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Both V8 options make for a solid tow rig, with the 5.3L capable of hauling up to 11,200 pounds, while the mighty 6.2L can tackle up to 13,300 pounds.

The other engine that saw some changes for 2022 is Chevy’s Duramax turbo-diesel option. This 3.0L inline-6 is well known for its smooth power delivery and 460 lb-ft of low-end torque, but its tow ratings weren’t quite what they could have been. That’s changed, and you can now pair this engine with the max tow package for the same 13,300 pounds of towing as the 6.2L V8. That’s a best-in-class diesel tow rating for those keeping score, handily exceeding the Ram 1500’s EcoDiesel by nearly half a ton (Ford no longer offers a diesel option in the F-150).

Ready to Work and Play

While the 2022 refresh may have made the Silverado look and feel like a luxury truck, this is one pickup that is still ready to put in a good day’s work. Chevy knows that the Silverado is the truck of choice for hardworking Texans and continues to offer it with a largest in class bed loaded with work-ready features. If you opt for the long bed, you will enjoy an impressive 89.1 cu.ft. of cargo space (the F-150 tops out at just 77.4 cu.ft.). But no matter which bed size you choose, you will get 12 standard tie-downs that make securing your load a sinch. Chevy’s six-position Multi-Flex tailgate is also available, taking the versatility of a pickup truck to new heights.

When you get behind the wheel of a Chevy Silverado, you know that you are driving a truck that can be counted on to go anywhere and do anything. If your travels regularly take you off paved roads, then the Z71 package will let you get the most out of your 4x4 with its Rancho off-road shocks, skid plates, and even a heavy-duty air filter to keep your engine free of Texas dust. Depending on the model, you can even equip your 2022 Silverado with a locking rear differential, giving you the extra traction needed to dig yourself out of sand and mud. However, for the hard-core off-roader who wants the best of the best, Chevy also introduced the brand-new ZR2 trim fill with performance features.

Hit the Trails in Style

For some, off-roading is more than a way to get where they need to go. It is a passion where the journey itself matters more than the destination. If you feel the trails calling to you, then the new 2022 Silverado ZR2 is your truck. Chevy didn’t hold anything back when they built this dedicated off-road machine, equipping it with performance features not found in any other full-size truck on the market - not even the Ford Raptor or Ram TRX. When you’re in the ZR2, you will know that there is no obstacle that can keep you from going wherever you want.

Under the hood of the ZR2, you will find a standard 6.2L V8 engine with 420 hp and all the rugged reliability you would expect from a Chevy V8. When you are hundreds of miles from civilization in the Texas countryside, reliability is key, and Chevy understands that. But the real highlight of the ZR2 is its class-exclusive suspension that includes front and rear electronic locking differentials and Multimatic spool-valve dampers. No other half-ton truck on the market offers these features, giving the ZR2 unbeatable performance on the toughest trails. Throw in the 33-inch mud-terrain tires, unique skid plate package, and high-approach steel front bumper, and this truck is ready for anything.

There is another place where the ZR2 beats the off-road trucks from Ford and Ram: payload and towing. While you may not expect it from the dedicated off-road machine, Chevy knows that not everyone can afford to have a truck just for trail riding on the weekend. That’s why the ZR2 can handle up to 1,440 pounds of payload and up to 8,900 pounds of towing. While those aren’t the highest payload and towing numbers you can get out of a Silverado, they handily beat what the Raptor and TRX are capable of, making the Silverado ZR2 versatile as well as powerful.

Technology

Cutting-Edge Tech to Make Your Day

Have you ever wanted to go cruising down Highway 90 to San Antonio, a sandwich in one hand and a coffee in the other, enjoying your meal as your truck does all the work? Well, now it’s possible! It might seem hard to believe, but Chevy’s new Super Cruise technology allows for true hands-free driving along compatible roads, and Highway 90 is one of them (along with all of the major interstates around San Antonio). While you still have to keep your eyes on the road, this system has to be experienced to be believed. Chevy has even tweaked it for the 2022 Silverado so that Super Cruise functions when you have a trailer in tow. Although it is currently only available on the High Country trim, the convenience of driving hands-free is well worth the upgrade.

Displays and Other Tech

However, you don’t have to upgrade to the High Country trim to enjoy the Silverado’s new 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen. In fact, this massive display comes standard on every trim, starting with the LT! While Ford and Ram made waves when they put 12-inch screens in their trucks, Chevy showed them who’s boss with the 2022 Silverado––especially since those other brands still put smaller 8-inch screens in most of their affordable trucks. But Chevy did more than live up to our unofficial state motto that everything is bigger in Texas; they also installed Google built-in, giving you access to apps like Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play even if you don’t have your smartphone on you.

For added convenience, Chevy even paired the new 13.4-inch central touchscreen with a 12.3-inch digital display in front of the steering wheel. This screen replaces your old analog gauges with a fully reconfigurable display that allows you to choose what information you want to see. You still get all your critical information, like engine temps and oil pressure, but you also get new information, like Super Cruise availability and off-road roll angles. Wrapping things up are the available Head-Up Display and Rear Camera Mirror, giving you a grand total of four different displays! Combine these with the Silverado’s incredible 15 camera views, and you will know exactly what is happening around your truck at all times.
