Engines
Pace and Power
One of the most exciting parts of driving a truck is the privilege of having some of the most powerful engines on today's market. However, not every pickup truck driver has the same needs, which is why both Chevy and Ram offer their trucks with a few different options that will help drivers keep exactly the pace and power they need.
The Chevy engine lineup starts with a 2.7L Turbo High-Output engine, which is standard on many of the available trims. The 2.7L engine has been a Chevy mainstay for many years but gets a serious upgrade for 2022. This engine now provides 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque––a 25% torque increase over last year.
Next in line is the 5.3L V8 engine. This one can be a bit confusing because there are actually two slightly different versions, one of which has Dynamic Fuel Management. This engine is standard on certain two-wheel drive models, as well as several models equipped with the Max Trailering Package. The 5.3L V8 without Dynamic Fuel Management is standard on several 4x4 models. Both versions provide 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.
Maximum Power
A 6.2L Ecotec3 V8 rounds out the selection of gasoline-powered engines available on the 2022 Silverado. Standard on the off-road-ready ZR2 trim and optional on many others, this power plant supplies a mighty 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
The diesel engine option on the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is a Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel. Good for 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, this engine is all guts and glory. There are very few jobs this engine won't power through!
Ram 1500 Engine Options
The introductory engine in the Ram 1500 is a 3.6L Pentastar V6 with eTorque. This engine provides 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, which doesn't quite match up to what Chevy's 2.7L base engine supplies but may provide enough power for drivers who don't need a lot of extra pulling and hauling strength.
The Ram's 5.7L Hemi V8 engine is the heart of the lineup and where the real power lies. It sports 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque and is available with or without eTorque Mild Hybrid Technology to enhance power without putting a larger dent in your fuel budget.
A diesel option is also available for the 2022 Ram 1500, but while it offers more torque than the Chevy, it comes in on the low side for horsepower. This 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine provides 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque to help drivers get where they need to go.

Towing Power and Features
There can only be one king of towing, and that's the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500. With a maximum towing capacity of 13,300 pounds with both its 6.2L gasoline V8 and its 3.0L Duramax diesel, the Silverado 1500 allows drivers to pull more than ever. The Ram falls behind in towing capacity, maxing out at 12,750 pounds with the 5.7L Hemi eTorque engine. Opting for the Ecodiesel drops that figure to 12,560 pounds, and the non-hybrid Hemi can only tow 11,610 pounds.
When it comes to towing technology, the 2022 Silverado 1500 offers plenty of assistance to drivers. Eight available cameras provide up to 14 different views in, around, behind, and in front of the trailer, allowing drivers to hitch, unhitch, maneuver through crowded sites, and hit the highway with greater confidence. Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert allows drivers to switch lanes more easily than ever.
Ram also offers drivers several optional tools that are needed to hit the road with a heavy load. This includes an available auxiliary camera system that provides a 360-degree view around the vehicle. Blind-spot monitoring is also an option for those who will be doing a significant amount of towing. These are optional features, though, and may only be available on certain trims or in conjunction with specific packages.
Trims
Options Abound
One of the most exciting things about buying a pickup truck is that manufacturers do their best to create trucks that fit both the needs and personalities of their drivers. From fleet-friendly base models to decked-out top trims, both Chevy and Ram are fully invested in driver comfort.
The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 comes in nine trims: the WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country, and ZR2. Each comes with its own distinct personality, too. From the stylish and value-oriented Custom trim to the mobile corner office that is the High Country trim, each Silverado 1500 is decked out in features that make sense. That includes the Chevy Safety Assist suite of driver assistance technology, split-fold bench seats, a 13.4-inch color touchscreen display, a 12.3-inch reconfigurable Driver Information Center, and premium upholstery.
Of the nine trims, three are prepared to leave the pavement for the road less traveled. The Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss are factory-ready to head off the road with a two-speed transfer case, automatic locking rear differential, and suspension lift, courtesy of the available Z71 package. The ZR2 trim, however, has been completely engineered to hit the dirt, mud, snow, and gravel with Multimatic DSSV dampers, off-road bumper, aluminum skid plates, and giant 33-inch mud-terrain tires.
Fewer Trims From Ram
Ram offers the 2022 Ram 1500 in six trims: the Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Rebel, Limited Longhorn, and Limited. As with the Silverado, climbing up the trims adds more goodies to the truck, including new arrivals like quilted leather upholstery and a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen. However, the Ram infotainment system is not as advanced as the new technology in the 2022 Silverado.
Those looking to leave the road behind can check out the Rebel trim, which is similar to the Silverado Trail Boss trims. But while the Rebel is prepared for a little extra action beyond the pavement with a sport hood, locking rear axle, and available off-road outfit, it doesn't quite offer the same capabilities that you can get out of the Silverado. If rugged terrain and wild adventures are part of your prospective truck's daily duties, you may want to consider the Silverado 1500 Trail Boss or ZR2 instead.
