2022 Chevy Malibu

White 2022 Chevy Malibu RS is angled left.

The 2022 Chevy Malibu is a midsize sedan that continues providing class-leading fuel economy and incredible value for buyers who remain unimpressed with the SUV and crossover frenzy. It's easy to get lost in the shuffle if you're a sedan. It seems everywhere we turn, yet another manufacturer is launching yet another SUV. Meanwhile, Chevy stays committed to continuously improving the commuter-friendly Malibu, and the 2022 model year is no exception. Whether you're a short-range commuter or you spend some time logging highway miles, you'll love the Malibu's long list of standard and available safety features.

With four trims and two powertrains to choose from, buyers can select the ideal mix of equipment and features to match their new 2022 Chevy Malibu to their individual budget and lifestyle. The sleek, athletic lines and aerodynamic styling that's unique to the sedan body style are at their best on the Malibu, and with an available 250-horsepower turbocharged powertrain, that athleticism isn't just skin deep. If you're looking for a performance-oriented midsize sedan that won't break your budget, the 2022 Chevy Malibu might just be the perfect fit.

An Option for Every Driver

The first thing you'll notice as you explore the 2022 Chevy Malibu is the wide range of available trims, colors, and package configurations. Seven exterior colors offer a spectrum of options ranging from classic hues like Dark Ash to a bright Cherry Red. Inside, buyers can choose from a beige gray and dual-tone scheme or a monotone jet black, letting you tailor the car’s appearance to match your sense of style. All Malibu trims feature front-wheel drive.

Four trims make up the 2022 Malibu lineup: the base LS, the RS, the LT, and the Premier. The base LS puts affordability at the top of the list and features 16-inch wheels, automatic headlights with standard daytime running lamps, and power outside mirrors. A 6-speaker audio system is included, along with an 8-inch touchscreen display, keyless start, and cloth seating. The LS offers budget-oriented buyers a nice blend of affordability and standard features.

More Features Available

Moving up to the RS trims means you'll get a set of larger 18-inch wheels, along with a black front grille that's unique to the RS trim. Body-color power outside mirrors and black Chevy bowtie emblems combine with the standard rear spoiler to give the Malibu a sportier curb appeal. Inside, an 8-way power driver's seat with lumbar control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are standard. Choosing the RS also unlocks access to tons of trim-specific appearance packages.

Looking for a few more creature comforts? Check out the Malibu LT. Sitting near the top of the lineup, the LT adds heated power outside mirrors, LED tail lights and daytime running lamps, dual-zone automatic climate control, optional leather seating surfaces, remote start, and a complimentary 3-month trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio. In its review of the 2022 Malibu, Car and Driver chose the LT as the trim to buy.

The top-of-the-line Premier ups the performance game by replacing the standard 1.5-liter engine of the lower trims with a more powerful 2.0-liter engine, along with adding a dual-outlet exhaust system and 19-inch wheels for optimal performance. A dual-pane power sunroof is standard, as are LED headlights. The Premier's cabin receives a 9-speaker Bose premium audio system and an HD 8-inch touchscreen with navigation.

Two Thrilling Engines

Chevy designed the practical Malibu for broad appeal and affordability. No one can argue the Malibu isn't geared toward practicality, yet within the four-trim lineup hides a performance-oriented option that adds a dash of hot sauce. If brisk acceleration is a must-have for you, Chevy has your back. With the Malibu, excitement and practicality aren't mutually exclusive.

The LS, LT, and RS trims all receive a standard 160-horsepower 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that's mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Fuel economy ratings of 29 MPG city and 36 MPG highway give this configuration a big thumbs up from commuters, particularly drivers with longer highway commutes. Urban dwellers will also love the Malibu for its midsize dimensions–at an overall length of 194 inches, you'll have no trouble fitting it in tight street parking spots.

The 2.0-liter Turbo

If you want the greatest possible power and acceleration, opt for the Malibu Premier. This top-of-the-line trim is the only one equipped with a larger 2.0-liter four-cylinder dual overhead cam engine that outputs 250 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Chevy swaps out the fuel-efficient CVT transmission for a 9-speed automatic that optimizes acceleration and smooth-shifting performance. One other key difference between the 2.0-liter and the 1.5-liter engines is that the smaller engine comes with auto start/stop technology, a fuel-saving feature that automatically switches off the engine when the car comes to a stop.

Speaking of fuel efficiency, the Malibu Premier offers fuel economy ratings of 22 MPG city and 33 MPG highway, slightly less than other Malibu trims with the smaller engine. Still, for drivers who want the maximum possible horsepower and acceleration, it's a small price to pay. Not only that, but the Premier's standard dual exhaust system adds a sporty visual and mechanical upgrade you won't find on the other Malibu trims.

Safe Performance

All Malibu trims include StabiliTrak, Chevy's electronic stability control system. StabiliTrak includes Traction Control, a feature that continuously makes torque and braking adjustments to optimize traction when driving on wet or snowy roads and during extreme driving situations, such as emergency maneuvering. StabiliTrak also includes a Brake Assist capability, offering drivers additional braking assistance if it senses the driver is performing hard braking.

Infotainment and Safety

Standard Modern Technology

Good news for commuters: wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included across the trim range, so streaming audio from your smartphone–from Spotify playlists to the latest episode of your favorite podcast–will make those long drives a lot more entertaining. Accessing smartphone content is easy, thanks to the Malibu's standard infotainment touchscreen. Malibu buyers will also enjoy compatibility with Alexa smart home devices.

The Malibu's LS, RS, and LT trims receive an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and voice recognition. It runs on the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System and is enabled for interaction with Chevy's suite of connected services. The Premier trim is equipped with an upgraded 8-inch HD touchscreen with embedded navigation that includes realtime traffic updates. The HD screen receives the upgraded, lightning-fast Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus operating system.

Driver-Assist Technology

Malibu Premier buyers can opt in on several advanced driver-assist convenience and safety systems to make the commute safer and more relaxing. Choosing the available Enhanced Driver Confidence Package adds Adaptive Cruise Control, a system that automatically adjusts speed to keep a consistent distance away from the vehicle ahead. The package also adds Automatic Parking Assist, a bumper saver that alerts the driver to any objects in their path.

Also included in the Enhanced Driver Confidence Package are seven driver-assist safety features that utilize cameras, radar, and sensors to constantly monitor the area around the vehicle, alerting the driver to any potential hazards.:

  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Following Distance Indicator
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Front Pedestrian Braking

Less expensive Malibu trim buyers can also equip their sedans with driver-assist technology. The Driver Confidence II Package adds the same seven safety systems, less the Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking feature that's exclusive to the Premier. Rear Park Assist is also included, as are the IntelliBeam automatic high beams.
