Chevy History

Chevrolet got its start in 1911 when racecar driver Louis Chevrolet and General Motors founder William C. Durant joined forces to bring two unique visions to life. Durant, who lost his position with General Motors after he failed to purchase the Ford Motor Company, was determined to prevail and thought the best way to do that was to build affordable and reliable vehicles. Chevrolet wanted to give Americans high-performance cars like he was accustomed to racing.

Chevrolet's vision came to life in 1912 with the debut of the Series C Classic Six, which offered several rarities of the time like electric headlamps and an electric starter. However, these luxuries made the Classic Six more expensive than most Americans could afford, which pushed Durant to realign the company's goals. Louis Chevrolet, however, wasn't interested in building more affordable vehicles and left the company.

Despite the loss of its namesake, Chevy flourished over the next several years as it built its reputation for delivering reliable and affordable vehicles that were surprisingly innovative. Chevy was often the first of the leading automakers to adopt new technology and pioneered the segment with innovations like the small-block V8 engine that made high-performance models readily available and affordable to the masses. Ironically, the small-block V8 brought Chevrolet's vision to life long after his departure from the company.

Chevrolet's innovative spirit is its trademark and is apparent in everything from the iconic Camaro and Corvette to workhorses like the Silverado.
