What do the last letter of the alphabet, the letter R, and the number 2 all have in common? No, this is not a trick question. Together, they comprise the name of what may be the most groundbreaking development in the Chevrolet Silverado since its origin. For those of you who are still confused, the 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 is about to change your whole perception of the Silverado. “Why?” you ask. Well, because it maintains everything that makes the Silverado a fantastic vehicle (which is pretty much everything) and turns it into an off-roading vehicle fit to compete with the Jeep Wrangler. Imagine that: a full-capability Silverado pickup truck with full-scale off-roading capabilities. Well, you don’t have to imagine much longer because the ZR2 is on its way and will soon be ready for you to get behind the wheel…though we don’t suspect it will be an easy purchase since anyone looking to buy a pickup is going to jump on the opportunity to visit this Texas Chevy dealer and snag one.

By anyone’s standards, whether you’re a truck enthusiast or somebody who has no knowledge of vehicles whatsoever, this is an excellent pickup truck. “But what’s the big deal?” you may ask, “What makes the ZR2 a ZR2?” This is a fair question, as the Silverado is already one of the best pickups on the market, and you may be wondering what could possibly make the ZR2 such a huge development. Well, we’re here to tell you. Let’s take a deeper look at what makes a ZR2 a ZR2 via four of its most essential components: Exterior, Interior, Engine/Performance, and Off-Roading.

Exterior

To begin with, the 2022 Silverado ZR2 gives the vehicle a refined exterior. What was already a strong vehicle with a bold stance now leans into these traits even further through exterior features such as redesigned headlamps, a redesigned grille, wheel options ranging from 18-inches to 22-inches, and an overall design that works to accentuate the sharpness and boldness of the vehicle. But it’s not just the style that is improved; it’s also the practicality. An available Multi-Flex Tailgate makes way for easier mounting and dismounting when utilizing the bed, making it easier than ever for you to access your cargo and do the work that you need to do. Additionally, the redesigned grille features the flowtie logo; while the Chevrolet bowtie is instantly-recognizable, the flowtie maintains the iconic design while itself being part of the vehicle’s airflow design. So, the form is a function for the ZR2.

Interior

The Silverado has never been an unstylish vehicle, but it has also never been as stylish as it will be in the ZR2. The interior maintains the sharpness of the exterior, with a larger-than-ever 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment system that feels like it emanates from the vehicle more than it feels like an accessory. This infotainment system includes access to Google Maps and other Google tools, allowing you to use all the opportunities the road may offer or require.

The screenage does not end with the infotainment center because the ZR2 also offers a 12.3-inch diagonal driver information (not infotainment, don’t let your eyes be deceived) center. So rather than your speedometer, mileage tracker, and other driver information tools being presented via dials and arrows, it is now presented on a sharp screen, giving you a more dynamic view of your information in a way that is easier to interpret. The information displayed, of course, depends on how you choose to drive, which makes it a collaborative effort between you and the vehicle. This is where the new electronic transmission range selector makes its entrance. Rather than placing itself as a lever extending from the steering wheel as it does in other Silverados, the range selector now presents itself as a trendy stick, allowing you more dynamic selection and better driver interaction. All of this serves to give you a more dynamic interior experience than you’ve had in any Silverado to date.

Engine and Performance

It is no secret that the Silverado has always been one of the most highly-performing pickup trucks in the automotive world. The ZR2 certainly does not back down from this status. The ZR2’s standard engine is the 6.2-liter V8 engine, capable of reaching 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. This is the most powerful engine you can get in a Silverado 1500 in 2022, and it is well worth having in this beast. While it may seem limiting at first, having only this powerful engine for this trim makes a lot of sense because this trim is designed to do more and go further than any of the others. Paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Transmission Range Selector, this combo will compliment you well on the pavement and anywhere off-road you happen to travel. In fact, you simply must learn more about the off-roading capabilities of the ZR2. After all, it is the off-roading, more than anything, that makes a ZR2 a ZR2; and it may just have a bearing on which engine you decide to use.

Off-Roading

We decided to save the best, most exciting developments for last: off-roading. Now, to be clear, the Silverado has not been incapable of off-roading in its previous editions; quite the opposite, the Trail Boss trims were designed with off-roading specifically in mind. But the ZR2 is not simply an off-road-focused trim of a pickup; it is a true off-road vehicle designed with specific chassis enhancements to make it so. Off-roading is a serious endeavor, and a vehicle has to be very fit to be able to handle the intensity that comes with it. If your vehicle is unfit for off-roading, aside from causing injury to the driver or damage to the vehicle, the driver is simply denying themself the fun they could have with a vehicle ready to take whatever they give it. So, it’s not just in the chassis enhancements that the ZR2 has prepared itself to go off the road; it is in a variety of hardware advancements.

The ZR2 is ready to handle obstacles through Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers and an all-new high-approach front bumper with a 31-degree approach angle. This bumper, mind you, is made of steel (as is the rear bumper), making it extra strong and durable for whatever may befall the vehicle during its off-road adventure. Not only the bumpers but also the underbelly of the car will be well-suited to taking the abuse of its obstacles, with the addition of optimized skid plates. All of this, of course, has to have the support of extra-durable tires, so the ZR2 decided to go all-out with 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud-terrain tires. We hope you will find that there is very little your ZR2 cannot handle.

The Best Silverado Yet

All arrows indicate that the ZR2 should be the best Silverado yet. We say “yet,” because this vehicle is always advancing, always working to better meet the needs and desires of its drivers, and always updating to make use of the best technology available. These three goals have led to the production of the 2022 Silverado ZR2, and we are confident that you will find this to be unlike any Silverado you’ve experienced before.
