If you own and operate a business, then your vehicle needs might go beyond what a regular vehicle can handle. You probably have equipment, inventory, tools, and other hefty loads that need to be transported on a regular basis. So whether you’ve had your business for some time and are ready to invest in a fleet of vehicles, or you’ve had it for a while and your business has grown, you’re probably looking for work trucks for sale. Work trucks can do more than your standard pickup truck. They are highly capable, tough, and often outfitted with features specific to the needs of certain industries.

Chevrolet is one of the most trusted manufacturers when it comes to work trucks. Chevrolet trucks literally move our country forward. Their trucks transport goods and products across the country, help construction crews build buildings, and get specialty teams where they need to be. Among the Chevrolet lineup of work trucks, there are different body styles, and each one serves a distinct purpose. So if you aren’t sure which type of work truck is right for your business, here’s a breakdown of Chevrolet’s primary work trucks. We hope this provides clarity on the different work truck types, and we are always happy to answer any questions you may have.

Low Cab Forward Trucks

The Chevy Low Cab Forward truck is designed to carry huge amounts of cargo. The trucks you see backing into grocery chain loading docks are usually Low Cab Forward trucks. These trucks are also often called cab-over (as in cab-over-engine) trucks because, unlike traditional trucks, the engine sits beneath the driver and passenger cab rather than in front of it. This unique design creates the distinct flat face of these trucks, which creates better visibility for the driver. This also allows for easier engine access for routine maintenance and repairs.

If you have a company that transports massive amounts of cargo on a regular basis or that has a large product such as furniture or pianos, you will need a Low Cab Forward truck. Moving companies can also benefit from these trucks, as some have cargo areas large enough to transport an entire home’s worth of belongings.

3500 and 4500 Gas

The base level of the Chevrolet Low Cab Forward trucks are the 3500 and 4500 gas engine models. They come in regular and crew cab configurations, which boast a GVWR of 12,000 and 14,500 pounds, respectively. (Quick note: the GVWR is the weight of the vehicle, plus the maximum allowable payload in terms of passengers, accessories, and cargo, but excluding weight towed by a trailer). These trucks boast 350 horsepower and 425 lb-ft torque.

4500 HD/XD Diesel

The 2023 4500 HD/XD Diesel Low Cab Forward trucks also come in regular and crew cab options. These larger, stronger trucks can carry even more than the base-level options. The regular cab has a GVWR of 14,500 and the crew cab has a GVWR of 16,000 pounds. They boast 215 horsepower and 452 lb-ft torque.

5500 HD/XD Diesel

The 5500 HD/XD Diesel are also available in regular or crew cab configurations, boasting a GVWR of 17,950 and 19,500, respectively. They offer 215 horsepower and 452 lb-ft torque.
6500 XD

Once you reach the 6500 XD, you’ll see a GVWR of 25,950 pounds. Here you get an upgrade to a 6.7L Cummins turbocharged diesel engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. This model comes in eight wheelbase configurations ranging from 152 to 248 inches, making it a versatile option for a variety of business owners. It also comes in several body lengths, going up to 30 feet long.

7500 XD

Finally, the 7500 XD is the largest of the Low Cab Forward trucks. It also has a Cummins engine and boasts a GVWR of 33,000 pounds. If you’re a business owner with massive storage needs, you probably need the biggest of the Low Cab Forward options.

Chevy Silverado Chassis Truck

Chassis Cab trucks look like regular pickups in the front, but in the back, instead of a traditional bed, you find a bare-bones chassis that can be upfitted in a number of ways. You can add accessories like roof units, shelves, and hangars. These are often used as dump trucks, utility trucks, and flat-frame trucks. If your business transports heavy loads that can safely be exposed to the elements or that won’t fit into the traditional closed body of a regular pickup truck, a Chassis Cab truck could be for you.

Chevrolet makes a Silverado 4500 HD, 5500 HD, and 6500 HD Chassis Cab, each slightly more capable than the last. They have a GCWR (that’s the total weight of the truck and the trailer together) of up to 37,000 pounds when properly configured. The 4500 HD has a max GVWR of 16,500 pounds, the 5500 HD has a GVWR of 19,500 pounds, and the 6500 HD has a GVWR of 23,500 pounds. These trucks have an available fuel capacity of 63.5 gallons and several cab-to-axle ratios for versatility. Each of these Chassis Cab models comes with a Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel V8, boasting 350 horsepower and 700 lb-ft torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Silverado HD Trucks

If you don’t need the massive cargo needs of a Low Cab Forward or Chassis Cab, but you do need more than a traditional pickup can offer, consider the Chevy Silverado HD line. While the Silverado 1500 is your standard full-size pickup, the HD line features heavy-duty trucks that are built to tow and haul more. Thanks to their standard-truck-like design, they can also serve as your everyday vehicle if you’re looking for a dual-purpose truck.

The Silverado HD options are going to have the technology you associate with regular cars, like smartphone compatibility, infotainment, USB ports, and high-quality audio systems. As for their capability, the maximum available towing capacity of the 2500 HD is 18,510 pounds, and the maximum towing capacity of the 3500 HD is 36,000 pounds. You’ll recognize the engines of these trucks from the chassis trucks. That’s because, from the cab forward, these trucks are very similar to the chassis trucks. Their rear portions are the main differences, and on these HD models, you’ll get a regular bed.
