Midsize trucks have a lot to offer. Their size makes them nimble in tight spaces, whether that’s a busy intersection, a crowded parking lot, or a narrow off-road trail. They’re also lightweight and affordable compared to full-size trucks. But great midsize trucks like the 2024 Chevy Colorado can still deliver plenty of power, so you can get down to business. The Colorado is a well-rounded modern truck that can be used for everything from hard work to adventurous vacations while also being a practical vehicle for everyday driving.

The 2024 model has all of the modern tech features that drivers are looking for to keep them entertained, informed, and safe while on the road. It also has a well-tuned turbocharged engine that’s powerful yet efficient and a solid trim lineup that offers something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a barebones work truck, a cabin with some extra creature comforts, or a fully-loaded off-road beast.

You don’t have to take our word about the Chevy Colorado; it’s been lauded as a great model by plenty of organizations that know a thing or two about the auto industry. Motor Trend named the Colorado their Truck of the Year for 2024, citing the truck’s off-road capability, unique design, and a wide array of useful standard features. The Colorado is also Edmund’s Top Rated Truck for 2024, praising it not just in comparison to other midsize models but all new trucks on the market. We’re proud to see the hard work that Chevy’s engineers put into this amazing truck getting the accolades that it deserves.

Powerful Engine Options

The 2024 Colorado comes standard with a 2.7L Turbo engine that can produce up to 237 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough juice to give the Colorado solid driving dynamics, getting up to speed well on the highway and giving you the acceleration you need to pass when necessary. It also lets you tow up to 3,500 lbs, which isn’t half bad for a midsize pickup. But if it’s not enough power for you, don’t worry, because there’s another option available.

While the available TurboMax engine is also a 2.7L engine, it’s tuned to deliver higher stats, giving you 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque to work with. This engine (paired with the Advanced Trailering Package) unlocks the Colorado’s 7,700-lb maximum towing capacity, letting you tackle big jobs or take a fully loaded trailer out to your favorite campsite. This engine comes standard on the Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2 trims, and it’s an available upgrade on the WT and LT trims.

Both engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission that shifts smoothly so you can get a great ride no matter how fast you’re going or how much you’re towing. But the TurboMax gets a transmission upgrade to help deliver its higher towing limit. The electronically-controlled system has a dedicated Tow/Haul mode that automatically raises upshift and downshift points to help you accelerate and brake smoothly and in a timely manner, compensating for the heavy load attached to your hitch. You’ll also get grade braking systems that help you stay in control while driving downhill without putting too much strain on the brakes, using the engine and transmission to help you maintain your preferred speed.

Beyond Tow/Haul mode, there are four other selectable drive modes available on the Colorado. Normal mode gives you a good balance between power and efficiency for everyday driving on smooth pavement. Off-Road mode increases your traction so you can get a better grip on grass, gravel, mud, or snow. Terrain mode is for when things get a bit more extreme, like when you want to crawl over an off-road obstacle or tackle a steep incline. Exclusive to the top-tier ZR2 trim, Baja mode helps you stay stable when driving over loose sand, so you can have an exhilarating joyride out in the desert without worrying about getting stuck out on the dunes.

Off-Roading

Options for Off-Roading

If you want to leave the pavement behind and kick up some dirt, mud, or sand, then the Colorado has plenty of capable trims for you to choose from. Even if you don’t upgrade to a trim that’s designed with off-roading in mind, you’ll get some useful gear for rugged adventures. Recovery hooks come standard across the lineup, and 4WD is an available option on all trims. Skid plates are either available or standard on all trims except for the base WT.

The Trail Boss is the most affordable off-road trim and has a starting price that’s only about $2,000 more than the LT. For that extra cash, you get upgraded from the base engine to the more powerful TurboMax, giving you more horsepower and torque, so you have the power you need for adventures on rough terrain. A two-inch factory lift helps you drive over obstacles like rocks and roots, while an automatic locking rear differential is on hand to help you out if a tire gets stuck in the mud.

But since the Trail Boss comes standard with all-terrain tires, it can get a good grip on most surfaces you’ll find on the trails. It also comes standard with Hill Descent Control, a two-speed automatic transfer case with a shield to protect it from the elements, and four selectable drive modes to help you get your settings just right, whether you’re on the highway, cruising down a dirt road, or getting into the weeds of a serious off-road adventure.

One step up the ladder, the Z71 has all of the features on the Trail Boss plus some extra upgrades. Its recovery hooks are bright red, making them easy to see even if you’ve picked up a good coating of mud and dirt. It comes standard with LED headlamps, taillamps, and fog lamps, so you can easily cut through the dark no matter the weather. The Z71 has one 120-volt power outlet on the interior and another one mounted in the box, so you can bring electronic appliances out to the most rural of campsites. There are also plenty of interior upgrades, like chrome interior door handles, keyless entry and start, and a rear window defogger.

At the top of the trim list, the ZR2 is a rugged ride that’s ready for anything. It has an extra inch of factory lift, so it rides a full three inches taller than the WT and LT trims. Instead of just a rear differential, it has driver-selectable full-locking differentials in the front and rear. It also comes with an extra drive mode specifically made for tackling sand: Baja. There are also multimatic DSSV dampers on board to keep your ride smooth when the path gets rocky and off-road rocker protectors to help keep vital underbody components safe from harm.

Before the 2024 model year, the ZR2 was the highest you could climb, but now you can up your off-road game even more with the ZR2 Bison. This package is part of a partnership between Chevy and American Expedition Vehicles (AEV), so you get top-of-the-line off-road parts and accessories included as standard equipment. That includes a heavy-duty winch-capable front bumper, a rear bumper, fender flares, 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, and multiple stamped steel skid plates, all made by AEV. Wrapped around those wheels are 35-inch OD Mud/Terrain tires that can take you just about anywhere.

Front and rear multimatic jounce control dampers help you explore truly rough-and-tumble terrain without feeling every bump in the cabin. With a 38.2-degree angle of approach, 26-degree angle of departure, and 26.9-degree breakover angle, you can tackle steep grades with ease, and a full 12.2 inches of ground clearance keeps you up and away from trouble. The Colorado ZR2 Bison has been tested on the legendary Rubicon Trail and driven in competition by off-road racer Chad Hall, so you can trust that it’s ready to hold up to tough driving in the real world.

Technology

Infotainment Assistance

Trucks may be best known for their brawn, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have just as much brain power as any other modern vehicle. The Colorado had a big redesign for the 2023 model year, which means it’s packed with the latest features, many of which come standard across the lineup.

For instance, while many midsize and even full-size trucks have small, hard-to-read screens as standard equipment on their base-level trims, the 2024 Colorado features a large 11.3-inch LCD touchscreen on every model, down to the humble WT. This display is the main interface for the infotainment system, but there are also plenty of physical buttons and dials throughout the cabin, giving you more tactile options for changing settings and taking phone calls.

To the left of the touchscreen, you’ll find an 11.0-inch fully digital driver information center; located directly behind the wheel, this display is right in the driver’s natural line of sight. While it’s still home to the usual suspects (speedometer, tachometer, fuel level, mileage, etc.), you can also add other gauges and see warning messages from the truck’s safety system. There are three different themes to choose from, and the whole layout is completely reconfigurable, so you can switch things up to match your priorities.

The tech onboard the Colorado can be useful in a wide variety of ways. Standard Google Built-In makes it easy to use voice commands to add a pit stop to your navigated route, change the music, and more. An available wireless charging pad lets you keep your phone powered up, even if your USB cable gets damaged or lost on a road trip.

The available In-Vehicle Trailering App (standard on the ZR2 trim) puts several helpful towing tools in one place, from trailer light sequencing to maintenance reminders and security alerts to your trailer’s mileage. The ten available camera views can come in handy for trailering (with hitch view), for off-roading (with available forward- and rearward-facing underbody cameras), or for parking (with the high-definition rear vision camera).
