The 2023 model year is already shaping up to be an exciting one. With manufacturers announcing vehicles that cater to the whims of critics and consumers alike, anticipation is gradually building towards each new release. Among the throngs of four-wheeled excitement getting ready to take to the roads is the 2023 Chevy Blazer. When it comes to this long-standing symbol of independence and individuality, little to no introduction is necessary. Ever since it made its first appearance in 1969, the Blazer has been the standard-bearer for both the SUV and Chevy's unwavering dedication to quality. The 2023 Chevy Blazer continues the legacy of one of the most recognizable and revered vehicles in the industry and once again challenges the conceptions of what an SUV can accomplish. With two powerful engines and an impressive powertrain, this new Blazer shows off the power and the pedigree that we've all come to expect from the domestic manufacturer.

Performance

Powerful Engine Options

As the SUV continues to rise in popularity, many manufacturers are placing their attention and emphasis on smaller engines and hybrid drivetrains to push the limitations of fuel efficiency. A noble concept, considering the industry's growing attention on lowering emissions and offering consumers vehicles that can be affected by the rise and fall of gas prices throughout the country. For the Chevy Blazer, things have reverted to the old philosophy of enhanced performance and putting "power" back in the term "powertrain." For the 2023 model year, Chevy has equipped the Blazer with two different engines, both of which place emphasis on performance.

The base engine is a 2.0L 4-cylinder that has been a part of the Chevy Blazer since the 2020 model year, proof positive that big things can emerge from small packages. Turbocharged and ready to deliver, the engine has the capability to generate 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Aside from those impressive specs, a Blazer equipped with this powertrain can tow up to 3,250 lbs. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard for both engine offerings to optimize performance.

For those who think that four cylinders just aren't enough to deliver the goods, the Blazer can also be equipped with an impressive 3.6L V6. If the ability to generate 308 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque isn't enough to satisfy your appetite for performance, then a towing capacity of up to 4,500 lbs will. While this engine is certainly built for power, it still manages to be cost-effective, averaging an estimated 22 MPG combined. That’s not all that far off of the estimated 25 MPG combined that the base 2.0L engine is capable of.

Built to Perform

The transmission that the Blazer uses is the GM Hydra-Matic 9T65. Originally introduced back in 2017 for use with the Malibu, Cruze, and Equinox. Although the Allison 10-speed is GM's highest regarded drivetrain, as it's used in conjunction with the Duramax diesel engine, the Hydra-Matic has already proved to be an effective tool in GM's ever-growing arsenal. Replacing the old 6-speed automatic transmissions, the Hydra-Matic is only slightly heavier and has been praised for its effective fuel economy.

With two engines equipped with an effective drivetrain, Chevy manages to find the ideal and heavily sought-after combination of performance and cost-effectiveness. More than that, both options cater to the needs of many types of drivers. The trailering type has a V6 that can haul their goodies around, and those who need a little bit of storage space and extra horsepower have a turbocharged 4-cylinder that certainly gets the job done and then some. No matter which engine you choose, the 2023 Blazer is sure to impress.

Interior

Muscle Car Spirit

Ideal performance should certainly be matched by an interior that provides comfort, convenience, and all the amenities one finds in their household. Just as its engines harken back to the days of high-octane performance, the interior of the 2023 Chevy Blazer is a blast from the past. Taking a page from the muscle car playbook, Chevy has redesigned the Blazer's interior to bear a strong resemblance to that of the Camaro. We assure you that while the spirit of the muscle car is alive and well for those who get behind the wheel of the Blazer, its technology is updated to reflect and adhere to the standards of the modern era.

Central to this redesigned and exciting look is a standard 10.2" infotainment screen. While many competitors offer a 7 or 8-inch screen with their vehicles, Chevy raises the stakes by making its offerings in the double-digit range. Of course, the Blazer is also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and available wireless charging provides some extra versatility where it matters most.

Sharp Looks and Plenty of Cargo Space

One of the more unique touches to the Blazer's interior that catches the eye is the unique shape of the air vents. Taking a circular shape that reinforces the cockpit aesthetic of the Blazer, these are much more than just show, as the Blazer's intuitive climate control makes for a comfortable ride no matter what the temperature might be.

Of course, like any SUV, the Blazer also has a prominent emphasis on storage. With over 64 cubic feet of storage space, the Blazer is ideal for all trips, from the long hauls to the grocery runs. One of the more appealing attributes of the Blazer is also found in the inclusion of ambient interior lighting, perfect for giving you and your passengers an aesthetic that fully enhances the stylish and sleek interior.

Safety

Driver-Assist Features

With peak performance and an interior that's both posh and pampering, the Blazer appears to be close to achieving perfection for the new model year. But there is still more to explore––particularly the safety features and driving assistance options. After all, performance and comfort will never be more important than the peace of mind from being safe when you're on the road.

With the unprecedented popularity and convenience of adaptive cruise control, Chevy has made it an available feature on all trim levels. While this is an available feature, Chevy is making its Safety Assist package standard. This is a collection of safety features that includes automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, following distance indicator, forward collision alert, and IntelliBeam headlamps. IntelliBeam is one of Chevy's unique safety features that adapts to ambient lighting and traffic patterns.

When someone is driving in a darkened area where no traffic is present, beams will activate, and then deactivate when traffic appears. One of the advantages of this technology is that it fixes the human error of forgetting to power off high beams when they aren't necessary. This is more beneficial for long drives late at night, where ample light sources are scarce and hard to come by. Chevy will also have a tire pressure monitoring system with fill alert as a standard feature on all trim levels.

More Safety Features

The Chevy Driver Confidence Package is available on the upper trim levels and includes a rear camera, HD surround vision, and adaptive cruise control. The 2023 Chevy Blazer will also have many of the standard features that come with GM's fleet, such as Stabilitrak. Also included will be GM's Teen Driver system, which allows parents to monitor their children's driving habits.

Like many other models, the availability of certain features on the Blazer varies according to trim level. However, much like the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade, the Blazer is limited to four levels, as opposed to the Jeep Grand Cherokee with six and the Mazda CX-9 with five. Fewer trim levels that are adequately priced means that consumers who want to increase the safety options of their vehicle won't have to break the bank in doing so.
